Snoring is not just a cosmetic problem of age or weight excess.
It’s a red flag for OSA.
- If your snoring can be heard through closed doors…
- If your friends won’t share a hotel room with you…
- If your snoring is embarrassing or makes you feel self-conscious…
- If you now sleep separately from your bedpartner…
It’s time to take this symptom seriously.
Whether you’ve left the bedroom because you don’t want to be a sleep disturbance or your bedpartner has left because you are sleep disturbance, this is a DO NOT MISS snoring red flag.
“But, I don’t snore.”
If you’re asleep, how are you going to know?
Some people only snore and have apneas when they get into REM sleep. Given the cyclic nature of sleep, this makes snoring an easy sign to miss.
If you put two people who snore in the same room together overnight, they’ll each complain about the other person’s snoring, but not their own.
Does lack of snoring mean you’re off the hook?
Nope. There are tons of other (more reliable) symptoms that serve as clues to the presence of OSA. Depending on where you’re at in life, symptom clusters vary.
- Can’t get to sleep/can’t stay asleep + droopy eyelids (aka ptosis or Floppy Eyelid Syndrome) + more than 1-2 bathroom breaks over night, waking up with a headache
- Weight gain + No dreams/excessive dreams + fatigue + brain fog + mood & attention difficulties + acid reflux symptoms/chronic cough + naps
- No subjective sleep difficulty + memory problems + high blood pressure + heart problems, such as atrial fibrillation, heart attack, heart failure, abnormal heart rate, or blood clots.
While risk is higher in men over age 40, in people with increased BMI, and in perimenopausal plus women, if you have a pulse and symptoms, there’s a good chance that sleep apnea is in the mix. Snoring and perceived sleep difficulties are not diagnostic requirements.
“But, I don’t want to wear a mask.”
You’re in excellent company.
All too often people get sent to a sleep clinic, undergo testing, and get “volun-told” that they “have to do CPAP.”
Your experience with sleep care is not supposed to be a bakery. You are not supposed to feel like a batch of cookie dough - bulldozed by a rolling pin - with the same cookie-cutter approach being applied to you along with every other person who walks through the door.
No “Cookie Cutters” Here
You’re not a cookie or a robot or a cow.
You’re a person who needs to feel heard, welcome, and valued.
You’re a person whose concerns and questions need to be taken seriously - not rushed through an office visit.
You’re a person who wants to deeply understand your sleep test data - to make sense of your story in the context of the report’s data.
You’re a person who wants to know what else is on the menu besides CPAP - and which options are most likely to get the job well versus not so much.
You’re a person who wants to have a sleep health expert accessible - so when a challenge arises you know who you can trust to help.
You’re person who wants to feel better as soon as possible - rather than waiting months and months to get on a treatment you didn’t even want to do in the first place.
If any of these sound like you, you’re exactly the person we’ve designed our sleep medicine clinic to serve.
